Subantarctic Islands to become marine reserves

29 January 2011, New Zealand.

Three huge marine reserves totalling 435,163ha are to be established in the Subantarctic Islands, Minister of Conservation Kate Wilkinson and Fisheries Minister Phil Heatley announced today (29th Januray 2011).

The Ministers’ decisions will see a marine reserve cover the entire territorial sea - out to 12 nautical miles - surrounding Antipodes Island, with two further marine reserves around the Bounty Islands and Campbell Island, covering 58 percent and 39 percent of those islands’ territorial seas respectively.

Sylvia Earle Receives Life Time Achievement Award & see clip of forthcoming Mission Blue film!

Our Changing Oceans, the 11th National Conference on Science, Policy and Environment, took place in Washington, DC from January 19-21, 2011. At the end of day two, Her Deepness, Dr. Sylvia A. Earle, was awarded the National Council for Science and the Environment Lifetime Achievement Award. After being befittingly introduced by ocean champion, Congressman Sam Farr, Dr. Earle took the stage wearing her signature light blue blazer and infectious smile to an enthusiastic standing ovation from the packed auditorium. Once on stage, Her Deepness cast her magic by opening with a seven-minute clip of the documentary/movie about her TED Wish and Mission Blue

New MPA in the Caribbean: St. Maarten's Man of War Shoal Marine Park

It is with great pleasure that the St. Maarten Nature Foundation announces the approval by the Honourable Minister Franklin Myers of the Man of War Shoal Marine Park, the first National Environmentally Protected Area for Country St. Maarten and a major step towards realizing Environmental Conservation in General and Marine Conservation more specifically for the island.
